This fruit season we’ve been inundated with buckets of ripe fruits that have fallen off the trees in our neighbourhood. Not wanting them to go to waste and with a a few shindigs coming up with the neighbours, we’ve made some delicious gin cocktails that you can make using this seasons fruit. The best bit is that you can freeze the fruit ingredients so you can still make these cocktails long after the season is over! Here’s one of our favourite sours:

This Grapefruit Gin Sour is a delicious, smooth cocktail that’s all parts tasty, sweet, sour and tart!

To start, prepare the sugar syrup:

  • 1 cup caster sugar
  • ½ cup water

Put the sugar and water in a small pot over medium heat. Stir until all sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.

Then to make the cocktail:

  • ⅓ cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 3 tablespoons sugar syrup
  • ⅓ cup gin
  • 1 free-range egg white
  • Ice

Put all the ingredients in a jar or cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into two of your favourite gin glasses, add a garnish of spiralled grapefruit peel, or a simple sprig of rosemary or lime wedge. Enjoy!

(If you want to add a little bubbles, top up with soda water)

And, if you’ve got a lot of fruit that you just can’t get through, freeze them in your ice cube trays for future cocktails!
